Q: Tell us a little about yourself.
A: I’m a down-to-earth kinda guy and I’ve always had a passion for video games and a dersire to work on my own games. Except for a shorter detour to Falun and my studies at “Playground Squad”, I’ve lived and worked here in northern Sweden.
After my studies I went to Resolution Interactive where I got into the industry, learned the “tricks of the trade” and over time I became a senior at the company. Today I’m the Lead Artist and the “head honcho” of the graphical department here at Level Eight.
Q: What do you do a typical day?
A: I show up early in the morning and start the day by drinking unhealty amounts of coffee. *laughs*
Then I get to working, which is really diverse since we’re only two artists at the moment and I have to pitch in on everything, currently level design. 8 hours work-day is a minimum of course, after that I go home and play some games or the bass guitar.
Q: Why did you decide to work on games?
A: Well…I’ve always played games since I was little, from back in the days when 8-bit NES console games where popular. I thought to myself that it would fun to be able to make a living off working on games and at first I wanted to become a programmer.
But I realized that I wasn’t skilled enough to make it happen and it also felt more boring than I’d imagined. However, my passion was rekindled when I applied for a course in CAD where I created 3D-drawings of machines and engines. It was the first time I’d tried to model in 3D and I was loving it, later this pushed me to pursue my further studies which I haven’t regret doing.
Q: What’s your favourite game?
A: Ahh…there’s so many…I really enjoy horror-games…so I’m gonna go with “Amnesia: The dark descent”, since it’s got a really nice atmosphere.
But it’s basically impossible to point out a single game since I also enjoy shooters and racing games, GRID was an exceptionally good racing game.
Q: From a graphical artist’s perspective, what’s the most challenging aspect of game development?
A: Hmm…probably issues revolving optimization when we’re developing games for mobile platforms with limited performance. As an artist you always want to use as large textures as possible for your graphical assets, basically you want it to look good, period. But you’re always limited to a budget and the hard part is to find smart solutions to optimize things even below your budget while making it look good.
Q: What’s the best experience you’ve had as a game developer?
A: I think it was after we’d shipped “Aqua Moto Racing 2” when I was still working for Resolution, and I got to read reviews which said it had awesome graphics. In the end it makes you feel great and kind of acknowledge all the hard work that you’ve put into the project.
Q: What goals do you have for the future?
A: Have fun and help make this new company a success story.
Basically, keep doing things that are fun with the people I like and make some money in the process.
Q: Can you describe the upcoming games from Level Eight?
A: Unique, cool and exhilarating games, with a focus on making them easy and fun to play!
Thank you for your time. Over and out! 🙂
